SYNOPSIS

Youth culture already rules today's world. How far away is a future in which old people are simply exterminated outright instead of shut up in homes to die? It's the year 2084. Everybody is guaranteed 80 years of perfect health, followed by mandatory euthanasia at one of many Preparedness Centers worldwide. Chloe (80) is resigned to her fate until she runs into a childhood crush, Tom (80) and they decide to escape together and live or die together as lovers.

Lunchtime Shorts is an opportunity to screen a short film and have a Q&A with the filmmakers all within the lunch hour. Come down on your lunch break to watch a film and learn about the filmmakers process in creating the work. Food will not be provided and one cannot eat in the screening room.

PANELISTS BIOS

Jean Barker, writer, director
After a 10-year, successful writing career as a journalist, feature writer and humor columnist, Jean came to the USA to pursue the long-delayed dream of becoming one of few female filmmakers. She was the first and only student to earn double MFA in screenwriting and directing from Chapman University. On one of her many regular returns to her hometown, Cape Town, Jean made the short film Paradise Road with a group of friends and a top South African cinematographer Jacques Koudstaal. The short film played in South Africa at Durban International Film Festival, and in Paris, France. Her sci-fi masters thesis film One More Day, which stars John Heard and Adair Jameson, won her the prestigious Director's Guild of America (DGA) Student Jury Award for Women Directors in 2014 and has played seven top genre festivals throughout the USA, with more screenings to follow. After graduating (while on the Optional Practical Training visa), Jean supported herself as a filmmaker by doing script coverage for top consulting company Screenplay Readers as well as for individuals in the business, and directing advertising content for mofilm.com, who work with top international brands. Jean has recently signed a deal memo with Memetic Films, who have offices in South Africa and Los Angeles, to write a South African feature biopic about famous stripper apartheid-era Glenda Kemp. She’ll be adapting a comic book for the screen for Emet Comics and plans on directing a low budget feature in the next year.
