Born in Detroit but raised in Los Angeles, Tom Selleck did modeling work and attended the University of Southern California on an athletic scholarship, majoring in business administration until a drama coach suggested he try acting.

Selleck signed a seven-year contract with Fox studios and worked in commercials, had small roles in a few feature films and appeared as a guest star on television.

His first TV appearance was as a college senior on "The Dating Game" in 1967. He worked on a semi-regular basis on the popular "Rockford Files." Selleck got his first big break playing private detective Thomas Magnum in the series "Magnum, P.I." The top-rated show was perfectly suited to Selleck. He won an Emmy and Golden Globe award for his performance as Magnum. Steven Spielberg wanted Selleck to play Indiana Jones in the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" but Selleck was still under contract for the "Magnum P.I." television series.

Selleck has "3 Men and a Baby" and later in "3 Men and a Little Lady." He has branched out into television producing. He was a recurring guest on the sitcom "Friends" during the 1990
