SYNOPSIS

THE WIZARD OF LIES: Starring Robert De Niro, who also serves as an executive producer, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Bernie and Ruth Madoff, the film examines Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme – his deception, lies and cover-up, all as the financier’s wife and sons are catapulted into a harsh and unrelenting spotlight. Alessandro Nivola, Nathan Darrow, Kristen Connolly, Lily Rabe and Hank Azaria also star. Directed by Barry Levinson, who also serves as executive producer along with Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, Berry Welsh and Tom Fontana; Jason Sosnoff co-executive produces. Produced by Joseph E. Iberti. The film was written by Sam Levinson and John Burnham Schwartz and Samuel Baum, based on the book “The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust,” written by Diana B. Henriques.

Alessandro Nivola - Actor

Actor and producer Alessandro Nivola won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Critics Choice Award for best cast for his performance as Anthony Amado in David O Russell’s AMERICAN HUSTLE, and he earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as the English rock musician Ian McKnight opposite Frances McDormand in Lisa Cholodenko’s LAUREL CANYON. In 2015 Mr. Nivola was nominated for a Tony Award™ and an Outer Critics Circle Award for his performance as Frederick Treves opposite Bradley Cooper in the Broadway revival of THE ELEPHANT MAN.

Nivola will next begin filming Gideon Raff’s THE RED SEA DIVING RESORT in June, starring opposite Chris Evans and Haley Bennett. Meanwhile, he just wrapped Sebastian Lelio’s DISOBEDIENCE opposite Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams. He will soon be seen in the HBO film THE WIZARD OF LIES, playing Mark Madoff opposite Robert DeNiro, as well as in three upcoming features: WEIGHTLESS, ONE PERCENT MORE HUMID (premiering at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival), and Lynne Ramsay’s YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE with Joaquin Phoenix premiering in
competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

In addition to three award nominated performances on Broadway, Nivola has starred in many films including JUNEBUG, COCO BEFORE CHANEL, A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, SELMA (Critics Choice Award nomination best cast), THE NEON DEMON,MANSFIELD PARK, GINGER AND ROSA, Kenneth Brannagh’s LOVE’S LABOUR’S LOST, JURASSIC PARK 3, and John Woo’s FACE/OFF (Blockbuster Entertainment Award nom best supporting actor) among others.

He and his wife Emily Mortimer set up the film and television production company King Bee Productions in 2014. He produced two seasons of HBO’s DOLL & EM and is producing two new as yet untitled series for Amazon and TruTV respectively. He is also producing the feature film TO DUST starring Matthew Broderick and Geza Rohrig (“Son of Saul”) set to shoot in June 2017.

Alessandro grew up in rural Vermont and graduated from Yale University with a BA in English. He resides in New York.
