SYNOPSIS
This in-person class will include a Q&A and a prepared reading session with Atlanta based Casting Director, Bruce Newberg.
Participating actors will prepare and perform a scene assigned by the casting professional.
ABOUT BRUCE
BRUCE H. NEWBERG, CSA is an award winning Casting Director with extensive experience in film, television and theater. He began his casting career at Walt Disney Studios as a Casting Executive where he supervised the films BLAME IT ON THE BELLBOY starring Dudley Moore, THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE starring Anabella Sciorra, , Julianne Moore, Rebecca DeMornay, MARRYING MAN starring Kim Basinger & Alec Baldwin, RUN starring Patrick Dempsey and ARACHNOPHOBIA starring John Goodman. After leaving Disney, he cast several dozen independent films including THE SISTERS (Maria Bello, Elizabeth Banks, Tony Goldwyn, Chris O’Donnell, Mary Stuart Masterson), ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING (Kim Basinger, John Corbett), WALKING ACROSS EGYPT (Ellen Burstyn), THE CHERRY ORCHARD (Charlotte Rampling, Alan Bates, Gerard Butler, Melanie Lynskey), JUST WRITE (Jeremy Piven, Sherilyn Fenn), LOVELIFE (Carla Gugino, Peter Krause, Saffron Burrows, Jon Tenney), THE MAKER (Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Mary Louise Parker), SPAWN (John Leguizamo), ZACH & REBA (Brittany Murphy, Debbie Reynolds) and WHEN THE PARTY’S OVER (Sandra Bullock).
Bruce is probably best known for having lured Kyra Sedgwick to television for THE CLOSER (J.K. Simmons, Jon Tenney, G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison), his first television pilot. He cast all 7 seasons of the series. Kyra Sedgwick has won an Emmy and a Golden Globe. The cast was nominated for the SAG ensemble award numerous times. Bruce then cast the first two seasons of MAJOR CRIMES, the spin off of THE CLOSER starring Mary McDonnell. He is also cast the CW show HELLCATS starring Aly Michaelka and Ashley Tisdale. Bruce has numerous theatre credits in Los Angeles and New York. THE PEE-wee HERMAN SHOW (directed by Alex Timbers) had a very successful Broadway run after one in L.A. at Club Nokia and was filmed for HBO. He cast the musical version of HAPPY DAYS (directed by Garry Marshall) at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank and cast a number of summer musicals at The Hollywood Bowl including LES MISERABLES (Lea Michele, John Lloyd Young, Brian Stokes Mitchell), THE SOUND OF MUSIC (Melissa Erico, John Schneider, Rachel York, Jeffrey Tambor), CAMELOT (Jeremy Irons, Melissa Erico, James Barbour), MAME (Michele Lee, Christine Ebersole, Ben Platt) ,SUNSET BOULEVARD (Betty Buckley, Len Cariou), MAME (Michelle Lee, Christine Ebersole), MY FAIR LADY (John Lithgow, Roger Daltrey, Melissa Erico, Rosemary Harris), SHOWBOAT (Douglas Sills, Alice Ripley) and THE MUSIC MAN (Eric McCormack, Kristin Chenoweth, Ben Platt). Bruce also cast five seasons of Reprise, with such shows as HAIR (Sam Harris, Steven Weber, Marisa Jaret Winokur), 1776 (Roger Rees, Orson Bean), PIPPIN (Sam Harris, Michael Arden), COMPANY (Chris Siebert, Judith Light), FOLLIES (Vikki Carr, Patty Duke, Donna McKechnie, Harry Groener, Bob Gunton), SHE LOVES ME (Rebecca Luker, Scott Waara), ON THE 20TH CENTURY (Carolee Carmello, Bob Gunton, Mimi Hines), BABES IN ARMS (Jodi Benson, Joey McIntyre) , BRIGADOON (Marin Mazzie, Jason Daniele), ASSASSINS (Kevin Chamberlin, Patrick Cassidy, Annie Golden), MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (Teri Hatcher, Hugh Panero, Kevin Chamberlin). Additionally, Bruce cast TEN COMMANDMENTS (Val Kilmer, Adam Lambert, Alison Porter) at The Kodak Theatre, MACK AND MABEL AT LINCOLN CENTER (Jerry Orbach, Sutton Foster, Sam Harris, Karen Ziemba, Douglas Sills and The Rockettes), HAPPY DAYS directed by Garry Marshall at The Falcon, IF MEMORY SERVES (starring Brooke Adams) at the Pasadena Playhouse and at The Promenade (starring Elizabeth Ashley), 110 IN THE SHADE at the Pasadena Playhouse (starring Marin Mazzie & Jason Daniely) and ATLANTA at the Geffen Playouse. For Deaf West, he cast BIG RIVER at The Taper and The Roundabout and most recently cast SPRING AWAKENING directed by Michael Arden at The Wallace Annenberg Theatre in L.A. which went to Broadway and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical Revival.
Since relocating to Atlanta, Bruce has done the regional casting for FINDING STEVE MCQUEEN starring Travis Himmel and Lily Rabe, THE 15:17 TO PARIS directed by Clint Eastwood, the pilots DYNASTY for THE CW and INSATIABLE for Netflix, the film CANDY JAR starring Sami Gayle, Jacob Latimore, Helen Hunt, Uzo Adaba & Christina Hendricks for Netflix, the film KILLERMAN starring Liam Hemsworth and the pilot THE WANNABES and QUEEN BEES directed by Michael Lembeck and starring Ellen Burstyn, James Caan, Ann-Margret, Jane Curtin, Loretta Devine and French Stewart.
Bruce has been nominated 24 times for the Artios Award in Casting, winning three times for his work on BIG RIVER, COMPANY and SPRING AWAKENING. He was also given THE MEDIA ACCESS AWARD for casting 10 deaf actors and 1 paraplegic in SPRING AWAKENING in 2016. Bruce was educated at Tufts University (B.A. in Drama) and U.C.L.A. Film School (M.F.A.in screenwriting). Prior to his casting career he created the TBS comedy series DOWN TO EARTH with best friend Sam Harris which ran for 104 episodes and wrote the book and lyrics for the original musical HURRY! HURRY! HOLLYWOOD! which premiered at The La Mirada Theatre and in workshop at Manhattan Theatre Club. He also spent three years as a writer for Bette Midler’s company Miss M Productions at Disney Studios and was a staff writer for GENERAL HOSPITAL. He is a member of The Television Academy, The Writers Guild, The Casting Society of America and The Teamsters.
